Robert Kalina studied at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt (Federal Training and Research Institute of Graphic Arts) in Vienna. While still a student, he was selected to succeed Austria's official money designer and was employed by the Austrian National Bank in 1976 as its only engraver, a pupil of Roman Hellmann. He went on to design all Austrian Schilling banknotes from 1982 and won the 1996 competition to design the euro banknotes.
