He represented Canada at three IMOs (1986-88), winning silver, gold with perfect score, and gold. At the University of Toronto, he became the fourth person in history to be a four-time Putnam Fellow. He completed his BSc and MSc by 1992 and earned his PhD from Harvard in 1997 under Joe Harris.
