Lerdorf was born on Disko Island, Greenland, and moved to Denmark in his early years. His family moved to Canada in 1980 and to King City, Ontario in 1983. He graduated from King City Secondary School in 1988 and from the University of Waterloo in 1993 with a BASc in Systems Design Engineering, including co-op work terms at several companies.
