Keep the mechanisms. Drop the identity. Lerdorf was born on Disko Island, Greenland, and moved to Denmark in his early years. His family moved to Canada in 1980 and to King City, Ontario in 1983. He graduated from King City Secondary School in 1988 and from the University of Waterloo in 1993 with a BASc in Systems Design Engineering, including co-op work terms at several companies. He started developing PHP tools in 1994 to solve practical web development problems, combining numerous small CGI programs into a unified C library and parser. He released PHP 1.0 on June 8, 1995.
