He discovered Bitcoin through the Freenode IRC network in late 2010 while completing his PhD at KU Leuven/Ghent University. He made his first contribution to Bitcoin Core in March 2011 and was granted commit access just six weeks later by Gavin Andresen, making him the second long-term Bitcoin Core maintainer.
