He turned professional in 1998 with Vitalicio Seguros, winning only one race that year. In 1999, after knee surgery limited his racing, he was a last-minute addition to the Spanish worlds team and won the World Championship Road Race in Verona at age 23, stunning the cycling world. He joined Mapei in 2000 and won his second world title in 2001.
