Saxena was an undergraduate at IIT Kanpur studying computer science when he and batchmate Neeraj Kayal, under professor Manindra Agrawal, developed the AKS primality test as part of their joint B.Tech. thesis. Both had represented India at the 1997 International Mathematical Olympiad.
