Liu Yu was born in 1995 and studied at the Chinese University of Hong Kong's Multimedia Laboratory under Professor Tang Xiao'ou. As a junior in 2014, he developed a drone flight control system using 3D convolutional neural networks and won the only Microsoft Scholarship at his school. He joined SenseTime at the end of 2015 as an intern, contributing to SenseTime's ImageNet World Championship win while still pursuing his PhD, flying between Beijing and Hong Kong weekly.
