Boklöv began ski jumping as a youth in Koskullskulle, northern Sweden, winning Swedish national championships from 1985 (age 19). He discovered the V-style by accident during training in the mid-1980s when wind separated his skis, adding 20 meters to his jump. He won his first World Cup competition on December 10, 1988 in Lake Placid using the V-style, and dominated the 1988-89 season with five individual wins to claim the overall World Cup title.
