She made her senior speed-skating debut in November 2003 and won silver at the World Junior Championships in 2004. In 2005 she became junior all-around world champion. She qualified for the 2006 Turin Olympics where, at 19, she won gold in the 3000m and bronze in the 1500m, earning Dutch Sportswoman of the Year. She followed up with world all-around titles and World Single Distance Championship golds in 2007.
