Keep the mechanisms. Drop the identity. Born in Jyväskylä, Finland, the home of Rally Finland, Toivonen was the son of European Rally Champion Pauli Toivonen. He learned to drive at age five, began karting at 14, and won the Finnish Formula Vee championship in 1977 before switching to rallying full-time at his father's urging. He took a remarkable fifth place at the 1977 1000 Lakes Rally and won his first WRC event in 1980.
