He joined the Brazilian national team in 1997 and quickly became a key middle blocker. He won the World League in 2001 and was named Best Blocker at the 2001 World League and 2002 World Championship. He played in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and went on to win Olympic gold in 2004 and World Championship gold in 2002 and 2006.
