Born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, to a Bosnian Muslim father (Tito's tailor) and Czech mother, Bilal moved to Paris at age 9. He met René Goscinny at age 14, who encouraged him to pursue comics. He won a talent competition for Pilote magazine in 1971 and began publishing there. In 1975, he started a significant collaboration with writer Pierre Christin on the Légendes d'Aujourd'hui series.
