He attended Ellesmere College before transferring to Christchurch Boys High School in his final year to pursue rugby more seriously. He made his provincial debut for Canterbury in 2002 and was signed by the Crusaders in 2003, the same year he made his All Blacks debut against Wales at age 21. By 2005, he had moved to fly-half and was named IRB Player of the Year after a legendary performance against the British and Irish Lions.
