He moved to England in 1977 and dominated the Townsend Thoresen Formula Ford 1600 Championship in his first year with a Van Diemen RF77. He moved up to Formula 3 in 1978 with Project Four's March 783, winning three rounds but suffering a severe concussion in a crash at Mallory Park that forced him to miss several races. In 1979, he won the British Formula 3 Championship, one season after Nelson Piquet. His performance caught the eye of Emerson Fittipaldi, who signed him for his Formula One team. Serra debuted in F1 in 1981 and scored one championship point in his career.
